Evening Over Rooftops
R.E Broughton, V.B. Unitt

The air was thick like honey
Looking from the room
The room had open windows
To let the springtime through
Evening stood by watching
At the side of summer's promise
The flowers in her garden
Were the envy of her friends

How far are we from dying
Is it nearly at an end
How far are we from dying
Is it nearly at an end

The smoke hung on the skyline
The city fell in silence
The sunset ripe and mellow
Was the light to write some thoughts by
Her children watched for father
From their window in the wall
Said a prayer for Grandpapa
And maybe many more
Somewhere in the distance
On a road so far away
I heard the sound of life
Though the people left for home

Three birds flew off a building
Standing proud against the sky
Many more flew with them
Spiraled upward like laughter
Faster harder
They rose up in a column
Hundreds upon hundreds
And twice that many wingspeed
Four miles across
Stretched a million miles high
The living pulsing column
In the lady of the sky
Feathers thrashed together
Locked in that huge one
I knew no-one could see it
And now that it was gone
I rubbed my eyes and tried to find
A reason for the flight
Exodus escape or was it just for me to see
Like the mating of the earth and air
Like water is to flowers
The envy of her friends
How far are we from dying
Is it nearly at an end

How far are we from dying
Is it nearly at an end
How far are we from dying
Is it nearly at an end

The Birth
R.E. Broughton

She lay in the dust began to die
Wondering how long it would take her
The scorpion drooled winked his eye
Wondered if he could make her
The pain was right twice as nice
She realised she was in labour
Life was a fight with men and mice
Mind how you talk to your neighbours

She cried in the heat shaking her meat
Sure she needed no friend
As much as this was beginning
It would sure make a beautiful end
The sand blew up in confusion
Salt running out of her pores
That being borne inside her
Was near to the end of its course

Her tits thrust up to Heaven
Her back was arched like a bow
The heat in the mother lay quiet
It was a long way to come just to go
Her body lay limp in the desert
Soaked with the love she gave
Her shadow will lie there forever
Reminding us all of that day

The scorpion wandered all over her body
Vultures stood still in the sky
If this was the end of beginning
Who was born and did anyone die

How those birds searched for her offspring
Craving to beat off her pride
So futile was all of their searching
Nothing that lived had ..... such eyes

Piece Of My Own
R.E. Broughton, V.B. Unitt

All I want is a piece of my own
A lot of land and some sticks
To build a home

Don't mind the dust
And the cactus he don't kill
In the morning I will drink my fill

Big black eagle heavy in the sky
I will teach my children
The white dove she don't fight

There might be no water
I will build a dam
I will have a woman
You will have a man

All I want is a place of my own
A part of you and the heart
To build a home

Poppy
R.E. Broughton

I laid on a poppy
It laid on me
A lot of thinking
And did it all for free
I thought of you…..
I thought of you

I wanted to swim in the river
But I saw what they had done
All the fish are dying in there
and we ain’t got no sun
I thought of you…..
I thought of you

I wandered in a meadow
All that rubbish there
Look at them with the plastic picnic
Talking ‘bout the length of my hair

I laid on a poppy
It laid on me
A lot of thinking
And did it all for free
I thought of you…..
I thought of you

I wanted to swim in the river
But I saw what they had done
All the fish are dying in there
And we ain’t got no sun
I thought of you…..
I thought of you

I’m gonna take a walk in the country
Take a look at that big blue sky
Take a breath of that clean spring air
Before they say die
I thought of you…..
I thought of you

Don't Even Know What Day It Is
R.E Broughton, S.A. Broughton, V.B. Unitt

I could fall down
Would you stand me up
It’s not enough for you to say you love me
Who’s the lad who’d kill his dad
For the sake of the right to belong
To the new confusion

I don’t believe it
Don’t even know which day it is

Do you trust in a world that turns about
While another mother’s sons are being borrowed
Can you laugh aloud
While you’re crying inside
For the years that you tried to belong
To the old confusion

I don’t believe it
Don’t even know which day it is

I don’t want life in the company
You are undone by the smell
Of next week’s savings

I don’t want God in the three-and-nines
You’re so fine
You’ll be ill from your own virtue

I don’t believe it
Don’t even know which day it is

We’re of the same opinion
So hard to tell us apart
We’re at the foot of the future
And it’s kicking us up the past

House Of Turnabout
R.E. Broughton

Sell me more cried the lady
Her wares all hanging down
I’m not a landlord or a tenant
In the house of turnabout
My pride is flat my body fat
My part played on this floor
Pay for me to play
And hang your tears next to mine

One with hope might move in here
Their shadows still intact
To try to find the way we’re meant
And not prepared to act
Geraldine was in the club
His face was torn in two
Now he could play with confidence
Again for me and you

Sell me more said the customer
His heroes falling down
Is it I that made you prisoner
In the house of turnabout
She wept I am at fault she said
It’s me that brought you here
Where the Madame’s at the peephole
And the bed is full of fear

I’ll not keep you in a void
Impossible to fill
Look upon the guest list
And the men that helped me kill
The vestiges of sanity
The bloom that was my pride
And you’re nearly like a brother
As you lie here by my side

Geraldine is beautiful
The smile plays on his face
And I swear if it could happen
I’d be thankful in his place
And I swear if it could happen
I’d be thankful in his place

Madhatter
R.E. Broughton, V.B. Unitt, S.A. Broughton

If you think it’s easy
The madmen are checking
To see if you’re home
God help the church
And the people it’s hurt
Like sheep in a fold

I am the madhatter
And I’m getting fatter
If you’d like to know
I stood in the queue
To do what I do
With nowhere to go

If you think he’s dirty
He once was a worker
A long time ago
He made test tube babies
For Catholic ladies
In Ladbroke Grove

A terrified rock star
Sits in a cop car
What will they do?
If the political parties
Roll into one
And leave it to you

A man in the morning
Sits in the wireless
To keep me asleep
You’ll sit there like robots
And just for laughs
Grow old if it’s cheap

I am the madhatter
And I’m getting fatter
If you’d like to know
I stand in the queue
To do what I do
With nowhere to go

Getting Hard - Intro
Edgar Broughton Band

What Is A Woman For ?
R.E Broughton

I dropped a word in the water
It finally fell into the sea
A voice in the sand
Held out a hand
With these words written just for me

What is a woman really for?

The people were calling
Get up on the wall
Hey you there do the talking
Are you ready to fall?

You’re kinda cool on the outside
But you know I can tell you’re warmer
Inside….Yes you are
You’ve a baby inside
And I, I ain’t gonna hide
Oh you know woman
The most we can hope for is sin

I dropped a word in the water, yes I did
It finally fell into the sea
A voice in the sand
Held out a hand
With these words written just for me

What is a woman really for?

Thinking Of You
S.A. Broughton, V.B. Unitt

When I first heard the news
I was thinking of you
And the words that were spoken
Were bent and untrue

It was a seemingly tragic affair at the end
And just when we all were about to pretend
I saw through his eyes as the sentence he spoke
He stood up his tongue was beginning to poke
All the fun from your head
To make you feel dead
All the fun from your head
To make you feel dead

But when I first heard the news
I was thinking of you
And the words that were spoken
Were bent and untrue

And it came to them slowly I seem to recall
Like the hate came to Hitler and the hope into Saul
They were all walking sidewards as they came through the door
As trivial as a tycoon in a travesty of law
Like natural they come, thine kingdom thine come
Like natural they come, thine kingdom thine come
So when I first heard the news
I was thinking of you
And the words that were spoken
Were bent and untrue
As the lepers were leaving in grey limousines
They were all dealing out their black barrister dreams
But they never once noticed what hung on his heel
Was a sign painted backwards and it said the word REAL
But never you fear there wasn’t a tear
No never you fear there wasn’t a tear

For Doctor Spock (Part One)
Edgar Broughton Band

For Doctor Spock (Part Two)
R.E. Broughton

What if the babies went on strike
For a better life to be born in
All of the lights would go out that night
You wouldn’t be saying good morning

What if the thing that holds that together
Decided to change its mind
You wouldn’t care who your neighbour was
There just wouldn’t be any time
